Best Masonry Paint for Devon Weather

What is the best masonry paint for Devon weather? The two systems we trust on south-coast Plymouth houses โ€” and the brands we won't spray.

Devon and Cornwall give exterior paint a beating most of the country doesn't. Salt-laden coastal air, 12 months of UV, horizontal rain four months a year, and the occasional 30ยฐC heat wave that bakes south-facing render. A "weatherproof" paint sold in Berkshire isn't necessarily weatherproof in Bovisand. Here's what we actually use, and what we won't touch.

Quick answer

The best masonry paint for Plymouth, the South Hams and East Cornwall is a silicone-modified, breathable, UV-stabilised exterior coating applied as a two-coat sprayed system over a properly primed substrate. Our two go-to brands are Sto and K Rend Stone Coat for premium jobs, with Sandtex Trade Hi Cover Smooth for budget-conscious projects. Lifespan: 15โ€“25 years on the premium systems.

What Devon weather actually does to paint

  • UV degradation. Plymouth has more annual sunshine than London or Manchester. South-facing walls in PL2 and PL9 are hit hard.
  • Salt damage. Coastal air carries fine salt aerosol up to 3 km inland. It penetrates poor-quality paint films.
  • Horizontal rain. Westerly storms drive rain at 80โ€“90ยฐ angles. Surface-tension and porosity of the paint determine whether water beads or absorbs.
  • Algal & biological growth. Damp shaded north and east elevations grow lichen and algae. Modern paints contain biocides; cheap paints don't.
  • Thermal cycling. -2ยฐC in February to 26ยฐC in July. Paint film must flex without cracking.

The two systems we trust

1. Sto silicone-modified masonry paint

German manufacturer. Premium pricing. Used on commercial and high-end residential work. Genuinely breathable (lets moisture vapour out of the wall while keeping liquid water out), UV-stable for 15โ€“20 years, and contains biocides that keep algae and lichen at bay. We use this on coastal Plymouth properties and any house where the customer wants a 20-year solution.

2. Soldon SureCoat / silicone elastomeric

UK manufacturer. Elastomeric โ€” meaning it stretches with the substrate. Excellent on K-Rend and pebbledash. Particularly good at bridging hairline cracks in older render. Lifespan 12โ€“18 years.

Budget tier: Sandtex Trade Hi Cover Smooth

Trade-grade Sandtex. Not premium but a reliable mid-tier system. Lifespan 8โ€“12 years. We use this when budget is the primary driver. We're upfront about the trade-off.

Paint we won't spray on Plymouth houses

  • DIY-grade Dulux Weathershield retail product โ€” fine on a Surrey new-build, struggles on a south-facing coastal Plymouth wall after year 5
  • Wickes / B&Q own-brand masonry paint โ€” short film life, poor UV stability, no real biocide
  • Cheap acrylic exterior emulsion sold as "masonry paint" โ€” fails in 3โ€“5 years in coastal conditions
  • Solvent-based exterior gloss on porous masonry โ€” traps moisture, causes blowing within 2โ€“3 years
  • Standard interior emulsion applied outside (yes, people try this) โ€” fails within one winter

The painter, not the paint. A good painter applying a budget system outperforms a bad painter applying a premium system. The prep stage โ€” cleaning, repairing render cracks, sealing porosity, priming โ€” drives 60% of the final lifespan. Don't pay premium-paint money to a painter who skimps on prep.

Brick vs render vs cladding โ€” what changes

On smooth render

Standard primer + two coats sprayed. Easiest substrate. 15+ years on a premium system.

On K-Rend / silicone render

K-Rend is already a silicone render โ€” it doesn't need painting, but discolouration over 10โ€“15 years is common. We use a silicone-compatible top coat that bonds to the existing K-Rend without sealing it off. Same breathability.

On pebbledash

Spraying is essential โ€” brushing leaves gaps between stones. Three coats often needed for full coverage. Use elastomeric for any movement.

On brick

Be cautious. Painting brick is one-way. Use a breathable mineral or silicate paint specifically designed for masonry โ€” never standard acrylic, which traps moisture and damages the brick.

On timber cladding

Different category โ€” see our cladding-specific products. Microporous coatings for timber that flex with the wood.

Colour considerations for Plymouth weather

  • Pale colours fade slower. A white or cream stays looking fresh longer than a deep grey or terracotta in full sun
  • Dark colours absorb heat. South-facing dark grey render can hit 60ยฐC in summer, accelerating paint degradation
  • Greys hide algae regrowth better than whites. Mid-tone greys are a great compromise

What does your guarantee cover?

Our 10-year written paint guarantee covers bond failure, blistering, peeling and flaking due to materials or workmanship. It does not cover damage from impact, jet-washing on max pressure, or biological growth on neglected surfaces. Realistically the premium systems we use last 15โ€“25 years โ€” the 10-year guarantee is a floor, not a ceiling.

The bottom line

For a Plymouth or Cornwall house, spec the premium silicone-modified system. Pay the extra ยฃ600โ€“ยฃ1,200. You get 8โ€“12 more years of life out of the paint, which over a 20-year horizon makes the premium system cheaper per year. Don't accept a ยฃ1,200 budget render job that needs redoing in 5 years.

FAQs

What is the best masonry paint for coastal Plymouth?

Silicone-modified breathable masonry paint such as Sto or Soldon SureCoat. Both are UV-stable, salt-resistant and breathable, with 15+ year lifespan in coastal conditions.

How long should sprayed masonry paint last in Devon?

15โ€“25 years for premium silicone-modified systems. 8โ€“12 years for mid-tier paints like Sandtex Trade. Cheap DIY-grade paints fail in 3โ€“5 years in coastal weather.

Will retail Dulux Weathershield last on a Plymouth house?

It's fine for the first few years but struggles on south-facing or coastal walls after year 5 compared to professional silicone-modified systems.

Can you spray brick?

Yes โ€” but only with a breathable mineral or silicate paint, never standard acrylic masonry paint. Painting brick is a one-way decision so we always discuss it carefully first.
